Due to the fact that Teemu had an early morning meeting, and that Anders (my brother) was telling me how he wakes up at five in the morning and starts drawing, I ended up getting up at a time that's early for me... It was 6:30... Here's my morning project: I sketched it yesterday, and colored it today. I imagine they're trying to cross a very busy road.

Not sure if I like this morning thing.. It's 10:04 and I'm starving.

I'm so happy to have gotten to work on this, and happy to finally get try out new techniques. It seems the hardest thing is to convince people of the viability of something that only exists in your head. However sometimes, other people are like yeah, that could work. And then you are like yay! And then everyone has a little dance party and boogies down. Thats what happened here.

"Let the right one in" Is hands down the best horror movie I've ever seen, when it comes to atmosphere, dialogue, cinematography, and acting. Possibly even the best movie. I feel I need to put it somewhere even higher than horror, it transcends the genre and becomes more of a social drama.

I felt I had to put this in my blog, so people don't think I'm just a twilight fan. To put it simply, Twilight is porn for ladies, and "Let the right one in" is serious cinema. If you disagree that Twilight is porn, I would have to say you are a little in denial. The deeply romantic nature of twilight is sexual, and romanticism is an integral part to female sexuality. Especially slightly masochistic romance, such as the nature of the relationship between the two characters. Then add on top of that a cast of eye candy, and there you have it. The best selling female porn in the world. All I can say, is more of this type of porn please.

Let the right one in, on the other hand is a wonderful personal experience. It's the sort of piece that makes you speechless. I have no need to dissect it, because to do that would be an injustice to anyone who haven't seen it.

Having said this, I feel much much better.

This is a new music video that was animated and designed at Anima Boutique for a Finnish Children's music duo called Ella and Aleksi. This song is about taking the night train To Rovaniemi which is in the far north of Finland.... You know, where Santa lives :). It's produced by the Bronson Club which have made a new horror movie called Sauna. It's directed by Juuso Syrjä, and co-directed by myself.

Anyway I hope you like it. We've taken inspirations from book illustrations we remember from childhood, and contemporary cartoons. We were aiming for something with honesty and heart.

So yes, I am a twilighter... Dammit. And I can't wait for the damn movie to come to finland. In fact I'm obviously so obsessed about it that i dreamt about it last night. I dreamt I was in sweden where for some reason, (probably swedish envy) I dreamt the movie had already come out. I don't know if thats the case, but that was the case in the dream. It was a premier and all the people from the film were there, also the singer Lykke Lee which I dreamt had made some music for the movie... Anyway, in my dream Lykke Lee wouldn't shut up and was talking all through the film, so i got annoyed and told her that as much as i dig her music I wish that at this particular moment she could shut up. She laughed at me.
The dream after that just gets worse, as my eagerly anticipated movie experience takes a dive by really slow moving scenes, and a voice over in the beginning that narrated how the two are going to fall in love and basically summarized the whole plot of the movie in one go. "Typical!" I dream to myself, that they should ruins something with so much potential...

I woke up and was happy at the prospect that I have yet to see the film. Hopefully my dream won't come true. However, with twilight on the brain i quickly doodled this:

Been working and then working some more. It's not that this is in any anything exceptional. It's just that at this point when the sun sets at 3 and the weather is like a slightly damp towel stuck in the freezer for 5 minutes, it all wears you down exponentially. As soon as it gets dark, I think mmm, something alcoholic beverage would taste good... And that seems to me to be a pretty twisted notion all together. I found it so hard to concentrate on work today, i resorted to sketch therapy... What I can make of it is not that much, I was listening to the Knife so it probably had something to do with the imagery. Yet who knows.

The weirdest thing is that bunnies pop up in my stuff a lot these days, and I don't even really like bunnies. But there they are, all over the place. Once, when i was a kid I had a bunny. I wanted one because two of my friends had had bunnies and they were great pets for them, I repeat, for them... Obviously not for me... Maybe my chocolate brown floppy eared bunny named brownie is haunting me or something. But all the bunnies I'm drawing are white, gray, or pink. So there... Can't be.. Can it?

Just a couple of weeks ago I was in a car with my sister, her infant son, a lovely lady from the university and her 12 years old daughter. My nephew was grumpy and it was already dark at four, and he was crying like his heart was broken. My sister was driving and could only put on bob dylan to sooth his sorrows. The rest of us were sitting quietly wondering how to help... After a while we all just listened to dylan, and watched the eerie sky outside and the cold november scenery... And this is what we saw... Or so I'd like to think.

Here is the weird ninja I made before the weekend, it's done in our usual Girls of Kalasatama way, no pattern just sculpting with fabric and half assing it while being slightly drunk, the results are always excellent. It's the red pvc ninja who apparently was more into fashion than fighting as he is no longer living... Sad, but flashy.

And here is the toy I made for my brother this summer... It attacked me right after I had sown it up, I'm not sure what made it so irate but perhaps there was something in the stuffing.

Pictoplasma!!!

I was just at pictoplasma festival in Berlin and it was AWESOME!!! I met Tim Biskup, Ian Stevenson, Rob Reger, Nathan Jurevicius, and so many others... And they were all really nice people, and we had way too much fun for four days...

I talked to real life characters, in costume and out of costume... I smoked a tampon, but lets not get into that. And I fell over sideways trying to explain the origin of the b-cup.

I know I haven't blogged in ages, and sorry that this is just going to be photo's from the festival. But it was great!

We doodled on the floor, in the end it was completely covered... This was just the beginning, and mine is off in the distance in the shadow of the chair.

Club 103, there were huge balls inside and people got smashed... This guy is very unhappy about that.

Ian's girlie lighter... He likes rubber.

Bunny Guru, Nathans exhibition. His stuff is just brilliant, so very pretty. I always kept regretting the fact that I wasn't richer, I could so have invested in everyones work.

Berlin in and of itself is a living entity, covered in amazing grafiti. The east side is beautiful and people are amazingly friendly.

And of course, Anttu my coworker... Our producer, is sitting doing producer type things.. This was right before a woman from the netherlands came by and mistook him for someone else. So now we know he has a dutch dobbelganger.

So the reason I haven't posted anything in forever, is that me and Teemu decided, one month before the deadline, to enter into the nicktoons animation festival... Since we only heard of it at that point we realized we had to come up with something pretty fast, and now a couple of sleepless nights later... We have made it and it's sent. Soon we'll post a link on our blogs, where you can go and view it. We also made a new blog which we both will post things on, that is our animation collaboration name, Unicorn Robot. Here's the image we put on the DVD we sent to Nicktoons. Cute Police.

I'm pretty busy at the moment, but I made little sketch just to try out some more aspects of Alias Sketch book... It's a nice program. :)

A little break down..

So I spent most of the day just doing this piece, well not most of it, but good chunk. Anyway, since this was a new process i just tried out... I'll share.

First I skecthed it in Alias Scetchbook. With the pencil tool only.

Then I took it into photoshop and added some color, using layers underneath the pencil. This was just to get a feeling for the lighting and color world. I did it in photoshop since I'm just more used to coloring using that program.

Then I took it into illustrator for a cleaned up refined look, and traced my main blocks of color. Trying to keep the levels of shades down to a minimum.

After that i took it into photoshop one more time and tried out smearing the hard vector shades into a more smooth airbrushed feeling with the smear tool using a customized brush. And then I airbrushed and tinted some parts of the image to make it more alive. Though that part is a bit lost in the jpg. Which is the final image you see on the top... Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

My friend Senja is allergic to cats, and her x has custody of her kitties... She misses them, so I made her substi-cat!!! The super non-allergic cat thing. Perfect for anyone missing that feline squeeze. I have two cats of my own so I know how much kitties mean to someone, and I just thought maybe this would cheer her up. I haven't given it to her yet, so I have no idea how she'ss like it. It was also my first time making a toy with a sewing machine. The tag was design with teemu, and he made the logo. Enjoy!

Yay finally done with the flash info film for the Igglo site! It took a couple of very long days, we had one of those insane deadlines. This is done by me, Teemu, and Mikko. Teemu did all the flash, and added the finess. I did the concept design and backgrounds, as well as some of the animation. Mikko did also some of the animation... So check it out! Be forewarned, it's in finnish, so it's probably gibberish to most of you. But maybe you'll enjoy the visuals.

I'm working on a short flash animation with Teemu right now for a website business. We are buring the midnight oil... Been working all weekend, the deadline is creeping up, when it's done I'll link the site here. You can expect that next week sometime... But in order to not loose my mind on this project I'm taking a little break to blog. So here are some recent skecthes from my notebook.. I'm enjoying the skin tone copic markers I have, I have a random selection of colors with me most of the time, so I make do with the colors I have. The result is interesting.

Halloween wedding

For our wedding we had a Halloween themed wedding, and since we met in Art school, our wedding was quite a project for us... But my favorite part, was our animation teaser we put out before our wedding... Take a look. Oh and don't get confused, I was Maria Sandell, I'm now Eliza Maria Jäppinen... To be honest I might have enjoyed planning the animation than any other part of the wedding. And it's my first animation, I've done character design and bg's for animation but never animated up until this project... I think it turned out perfect, since we both did our own part and they still fit wonderfully together. Later I'll dig up the storyboard and the designs I did before making it, to show the process. This was of course totally non-profit.

How to?

I have family living in San Francisco, and I have the opportunity, since I am studying and could easily go for a while to the bay area, to look for an internship in the us... I've been dreaming about interning somewhere in some animation studio just to get more experience of this type of work on a more international scale. But I'm very unsure about how to approach going about getting an internship I would like, how to apply, and how to find out about all the different studios offering internships, since I'm in Helsinki at the moment. To tell you the truth the thought is a bit daunting because it is for me so unclear what do about it. And as always there are a millions of projects I'm involved with here, and the is always a reason to postpone doing something about it, but I'm not getting any younger. So if anyone can tell me anything useful about how to go about doing this, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you :)

Ok so today I'm in blog mode, here are two paintings I did this summer... I had a small exhibition for some friends a couple of month ago, at company party. I don't paint often, but got really into it again in the summer. The one on top is Oogie, he is lost. He was supposed to be in another painting but accidentaly wandered over to this one. And the on the bottom is the high priestess, I was just experimenting with a style I'd been wanting to try out, inspired by some great new artists around... It wasn't a total success, but I like it more now than I did when I finished it.

It's nice to look at some old stuff and realize that you've improved... I see things I'd do different in this design now, but I was really pleased with it a couple of years ago. It makes me feel like I can keep enjoying improving forever. This was for one of those mobile logo ad things. It was one of my first character design jobs... At the interview the guys asked me if I could also do cute girlie things, since my portfolio at the time was full of monsters, weapons, and naked chicks. I said sure, I'm a girl.

Just went through my recent sketch book and scanned in some of the ones i really liked. Some of them were just scribbles with an ink pen, so I colored them. My favorite is the picture I drew for my friend in a bar to illustrate just how awkward and weird I looked at the age of five... I tried to make myself look like the little hobgoblin I was... I really wanted to create this blog just throw out some of my ideas and sketches to the world, feedback is great whenever you get it. I'm obviously really new to this stuff, I haven't gotten around enough, no pun intended... I also wanted just to be part of the artist community. I freelance a lot and am stuck in chilly Finland which has too much land mass and too little people, so it gets a bit lonely as well as redundant. I'm hoping to post some new character skecthes next week on an idea I'm developing for myself, all the stuff I've posted so far is a bit outdated, since everything I've been working on this year is unreleased... But hopeful I can share some new stuff soon.

The Apathy Bear

We had to make some design products in my University... I found a reason to make toys, and then make post cards out of it. The teacher is still holding on to the real apathy bear, she wanted me to sew one for her, I told her she could keep it hostage till I do... I still haven't found the time... Oh the apathy.

This was your classic fanatsy fighting realm kinda stuff, I did some sketches then went straight into illustrator... It was fun, kinda like being a teenager again. Though it was for these super huge banners, and I was faced with the question: How the hell is 5 meter banners done, anyway? Because everytime I started typing in the file sizes into my programs my computer just freaked out... So I got very inventive with Illustrator. This image was 5 by four meters.. If I recall correctly.
